Пьеса написана и поставлена драматургом в 1943 году в осажденном фашистами Париже. Бунт главной героини против лицемерия и бесчеловечности власти, обывательского маленького счастья звучит пронзительно и в наше время. Эта пьеса о свободе выбора, о честности к самому себе, о юношеском максимализме, о любви и одиночестве. О том, что каждому из нас когда-нибудь придется выбирать и сыграть свою роль до конца.
