Anna Yudintseva — a scientist and engineer of space systems — opens her Eastern Coast tour in the run-up to a major tour across the USA.
How strange can the Universe actually be?
Why can time move at different speeds for different observers? Can the beginning of time be "seen"? How does gravity curve space, and why are scientists building giant detectors to hear the collisions of black holes from billions of light-years away from Earth? And, finally, is the Universe truly infinite?
In this lecture, Anna Yudintseva will explain, in simple and clear language, about space and time, gravity and gravitational waves, the structure of the Universe, and how modern experiments make it possible to test ideas that until recently existed only in theory.
Anna works at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where she participates in the design of Cosmic Explorer — a next-generation gravitational-wave detector — and develops the CEBEX prototype at the LIGO observatory.
It was LIGO that, in September 2015, first directly detected gravitational waves from the collision of two black holes — an event that opened up an entirely new way of observing the Universe. For their contribution to the creation of LIGO and this discovery, a Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in 2017.
This lecture is about how modern science is trying to answer the biggest questions: what is time, how is space structured, and does the Universe have a boundary.
