The film is a beautiful, meditative dramatization of the last days of the Russian writer and Gulag survivor Varlam Shalamov. In 1980 USSR, Shalamov, the author of the notorious Kolyma Tales, is warned to stop writing as he experiences his final days. Meanwhile, two other men are on an obsessive search for Shalamov’s handwritten account of life in the labor camps—and nothing will stop them from publishing the scandalous masterpiece.
