TIV Theater brings its acclaimed staging of Tevye the Dairyman to Montreal — a warm, funny, heartbreaking portrait of a milkman, his five daughters, and a world about to disappear. Based on Grigory Gorin's play, itself drawn from the Sholem Aleichem stories that gave the world Fiddler on the Roof, the production sets Tevye's story inside the floating, dreamlike imagery of Marc Chagall: a village that lifts off the ground, a fiddler in the sky, colour and music where there should only be loss.
A cast of some twenty performers, live music, and projected design carry the audience from the laughter of a crowded shtetl kitchen to the silence of the road out of it. It is a story about faith, stubbornness, love that arrives at the wrong time, and what a family carries with it when it has to leave everything else behind.
Performed in Russian with English subtitles.
Running time approximately 3 hours, including one intermission.
