«Зачем мы здесь? Первая русская эмиграция о себе (1920–1939)» открывает серию, посвященную эмиграции как историческому и антропологическому опыту. В первую книгу серии вошла эссеистика (публицистика) межвоенного периода, когда вопрос, вынесенный в заглавие, стоял для эмигрантов первой волны наиболее остро, а поиски ответа на него зависели от множества обстоятельств. Какие процессы в России и за границей определяли политические и художественные задачи первой волны? Почему на смену «Миссии русской эмиграции», провозглашенной Буниным в 1924 году, приходит осознание, что как «государство без территории» эмиграция не состоялась? Только ли надвигающаяся Вторая мировая война заставит Юрия Рапопорта возвестить о «Конце Зарубежья» в 1939 году? На протяжении двух десятилетий разные авторы ищут ответ на вопрос, вновь ставший актуальным через сто лет. Что сообщает нам их опыт сегодня?

Why Are We Here? The First Russian Emigration Examines Itself (1920–1939) launches a series devoted to the historical and anthropological experience of exile. This first book in the series features essays from the Interwar period (1920s-1930s), when the titular question—“why are we here?”—was sharply relevant for Russian émigrés of the First Wave. Their attempts to answer it depended on multiple circumstances. What processes in Russia and abroad defined the political and aesthetic objectives of the First Wave? Why did the “Mission of the Russian Emigration,” proclaimed by Bunin in 1924, give way to the realization that as a “state without a territory” the emigration had failed? Was it only the looming threat of World War II that compelled Yuri Rapoport to declare “The End of Russia Abroad” in 1939? Over the course of two decades, various authors sought answers to a question that has once again become topical a hundred years later. What does their experience mean for us today?
