Морис Жоли — кто он? Создатель разрушительной теории заговора, автор руководства для начинающих диктаторов? Революционер-коммунар или агент тайной полиции Сюртэ? Публицист или газетный подёнщик? Адвокат или сутяга? Куда привела его погоня за славой?
Адвокат Морис Жоли жил в Париже в середине XIX века и вошёл в историю как автор политического памфлета “Разговоры Макиавелли и Монтескьё в царстве мёртвых” против императора Наполеона III. Спустя почти полвека его текст стал основой для фальшивки «Протоколы сионских мудрецов» (сам Жоли не имел никакого отношения к их созданию: он ушёл из жизни задолго до их появления). Его имя вновь всплыло в книге Германа Бернштейна “Правда о Протоколах” (1935). Жоли стал второстепенным персонажем в романе Умберто Эко “Пражское кладбище”, однако его образ там лишён исторической достоверности.
So who was this man whose ideas and style were so crudely distorted by the anonymous author of the "Protocols"? Historians Sergei Varshavsky and Andrei Doronin studied his life through the most minute archival traces — from newspaper publications and proclamations to police reports and court documents. Personal correspondence, legal practice, participation in political processes — all of this allows us to see in him a figure who reflected an entire era.
This book is not just a biography. It is a story about Paris, about the Second Empire, about Baron Osmane, about the defeat at Sedan, about the Paris Commune and the birth of the Third Republic — through the eyes of a man who strived for glory, but ended up in the shadows.
Sergei Varshavsky is a physician, entrepreneur, and collector; he has lived in the United States since 1999. He studies the history of democracy and despotism, and researches the life and work of Maurice Joly. In 2016, he published his book "Conversations of Machiavelli and Montesquieu in the Kingdom of the Dead" adapted for the Russian reader.
