On September 24, «Bely Krolik» will be hosting artist and curator of contemporary art exhibitions and festivals Dima Alexeev.
Russian street art of the late 1990s — mid-2010s is one of the most vibrant and contradictory artistic phenomena of its time. Having emerged as a free art of the streets, it very quickly transformed into an independent cultural phenomenon, uniting protest, poetry, philosophy, and the search for a new artistic language.
At the meeting, Dima Alexeev will tell the history of this movement from the inside. Being a direct participant in the preparation of the largest street art festivals in Moscow and other cities, he was personally acquainted with many key artists and witnessed firsthand how the new Russian avant-garde was born before his eyes.
We will recall the legendary crew «Zachem», the group «Voyna», Pasha 183, Timofey Radya, and other artists whose works transformed the urban landscape and the perception of what art can be in public space.
Why did Russian street art turn out to be such a powerful artistic statement? How did it go from a quiet underground movement to recognition — and why did this flourishing turn out to be so short-lived? What remains today of an art form that existed on the walls of cities and often disappeared faster than anyone could write about it?
This will be a conversation about two decades of freedom, hopes and disappointments, captured on city walls, — and about the last great surge of avant-garde art in Russia.
