On October 7, we have Maria Antonyan visiting us with a lecture “Performance and National Identity”!
The art of performance is one of the most sought-after genres of the contemporary art scene, working with themes of corporeality, consciousness, taboo, energy, physical presence, and witnessing. Over more than 70 years of its existence, the “live art” of classical performance has introduced the concept of the “artist-performer” into common use and significantly broadened our understanding of the possibilities of the public performative act. Among the inexhaustible range of themes addressed by each new generation of artists, a special place is occupied by the problem of individual and collective identity.
What happens to our sense of self when the body becomes an artistic material? How does performance explore questions of belonging, cultural memory, historical experience, migration, and the sense of “one’s own” and “foreign”?
In the lecture “Performance and National Identity,” Maria Antonyan will examine the works of world-renowned performance artists who create spaces for dialogue about collective experience, national memory, boundaries, and transformation.
Lecturer: Maria Antonyan – PhD candidate in cultural studies, performance specialist, translator, author of the first book on performance in Russia, “The Artist Is Present. Marina Abramović Is Present.”
