«Impossible New York» is a local history stand-up about a city you can't help falling in love with and in which it's impossible to live.
New York is a remarkable city: being neither the capital of the USA nor even the capital of its own state, it has long become the capital of the world — of finance and fashion, contemporary art and street culture, museums and theaters, immigration and big politics.
People come to our city from all over the world chasing the American dream, but often find a branch of their own homeland here, living as if they never left. New York is unlike the rest of America, yet it contains the entire rest of the world.
At Vaso's lecture, he will personally tell you about a New York that combines the incompatible: about the most unexpected neighborhoods and their histories, about the paradoxes, secrets, and mysteries of the city — about its greatness and decline, about contrasts you won't find anywhere else. About a city that seems impossible, yet inexplicably draws us all in. About a city you might hate, but can't help loving.
We ambitiously try to answer the widest spectrum of questions: why did New York build residential towers right on a 12-lane highway? Why did they carve a hole in the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal for a real ballistic missile? How much does the "Naked Cowboy" actually earn? Where in New York are the real underground catacombs? What do we need a submarine on the Hudson River for?
Vaso Danilenko is the author of the New York guide nyc-map.com and the Telegram blog about New York Token Friend. He has visited all 50 states and continues to explore the country from the most diverse angles — from cult architecture and national parks to strange exotic places that usually remain off the beaten tourist path.
