About Margarita Kuleva. "How to Conquer New York? The History of the New York Art World and Its Inhabitants in New York
This lecture is an ethnographic excursion into the New York art world. Its goal is far from offering a ready-made “recipe” for how to become a successful artist in New York. Rather, based on academic research, the lecture will present a social “archeology” of the New York art world, showing how its main institutions and networks took shape, and how New York became a world capital of artistic life in the first place (and this happened quite recently). Finally, the lecture will offer a social portrait of contemporary New York artists – beyond the limits of that small group we read about in the media.
Margarita Kuleva is a cultural sociologist, curator, and researcher. Margarita focuses on studying social inequality in the world of art and creative industries in order to help make working conditions in this sector more fair. She acts as an ethnographer to uncover the “closures” of cultural institutions and make invisible cultural workers more visible and significant. Margarita is an invited professor at New York University (NYU), and also collaborates with the digital contemporary art gallery TAEX as a curator. In 2023-2023 she was an invited professor at Tufts University, and previously taught at the National Research University “Higher School of Economics” (associate professor of the Department of Sociology and head of the Design and Contemporary Art Department). As a researcher, curator, and ethnographer, Margarita has worked with a number of international cultural institutions, including the Manifesta Biennale, Boston Center for the Arts, Pushkin House London, Garage MoCA, the Goethe Institute, the Museum of Street Art, the Ural Industrial Biennial, and New Holland in St. Petersburg. She lives and works in New York.

New York is a city that cannot be viewed from a single perspective. It changes depending on who is looking at it: a photographer, an architect, an art historian, a historian, a researcher, or simply a person who walks its streets every day. Over the course of several months, we will explore this vast and enigmatic city piece by piece. There will be remarkable guests, completely different topics, unexpected perspectives, and, we hope, many discoveries even for those who have long considered themselves connoisseurs of New York, as well as, of course, the cozy atmosphere of our rabbit hole!
