On September 22, we are delighted to welcome Evgeny Gindilis, an independent film producer who found himself at the center of many of the important events of that era. He will give a lecture titled “From The Great Dictator to Old Songs About the Main Thing. The 1990s. Moscow — New York — Moscow.”
The 1990s remain one of the most controversial periods in Russian history. Evgeny invites us to look at this decade not only through the lens of today’s interpretations, but also through his own experience — as someone who witnessed and participated in many of the events of that time.
We will talk about:
— how the Museum of Cinema came into being and the generation it shaped;
— the emergence of the first private television channels backed by Boris Berezovsky and Vladimir Gusinsky (ORT and NTV), and the role they played in the political life of the 1990s;
— what the American experience was like in the early 1990s, when Evgeny became one of the first students from Russia at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts;
— and, of course, the people he met along the way during this remarkable era.
“I will try to tell the story as openly and honestly as possible,” Evgeny promises.
The language of the event will depend on the audience — Russian or English.

Yevgeny Gindilis is an independent film producer. He was born in Moscow in 1966. After graduating from the Faculty of Geography at Moscow State University (MSU), he worked at the Cinema Museum. In 1990, he left for New York, where he graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and worked as a programmer for the annual New York Jewish Film Festival at Lincoln Center. Upon returning to Moscow, he produced feature films and television series. In 2004, he founded the film company TVINDIE. He built a solid reputation in the field of international co-productions. After 2014, he dedicated his career almost entirely to creating documentary films on pressing political and social themes.
He produced the film The Man Who Was Too Free (2016) about Boris Nemtsov and collaborated closely with director Alexander Rastorguev on the film Electing Russia (2018) about Alexei Navalny. Following Rastorguev’s tragic murder in 2018, Gindilis produced the biographical documentary Rastorguev (2021).
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Gindilis opposed the military aggression and emigrated to France. In Paris, he continued his work in documentary filmmaking. He produced the film Artem & Eva (2023, directed by Yevgeny Milykh) with the participation of the Arte television channel, as well as the film Finist about the political trial of theater director Zhenya Berkovich (2027, directed by Yana Irtenieva). He organizes annual pitchings and retrospectives of documentary cinema in Paris.

1990-е до сих пор остаются одним из самых спорных периодов российской истории. Евгений предлагает взглянуть на это десятилетие не только через сегодняшние интерпретации, но и через собственный опыт — человека, который был свидетелем и участником событий.
Поговорим о том:
— как возник Музей кино и какое поколение он сформировал;
— как появились первые частные телеканалы Березовского и Гусинского (ОРТ и НТВ) и какую роль сыграли в политической жизни 1990-х;
— каким был американский опыт начала 90-х, когда Евгений стал одним из первых студентов из России в Tisch School of the Arts Нью-Йоркского университета;
— и, конечно, о людях, с которыми его свела эта удивительная эпоха.

Евгений Гиндилис – Независимый кинопродюсер. Родился в Москве в 1966 году. После окончания географического МГУ работал в Музее кино. В 1990 году уехал в Нью-Йорк, где окончил школу искусств Tisch Нью-Йоркского университета (NYU) и работал отборщиком ежегодного кинофестиваля Еврейского музея в Линкольн Центре. Вернувшись в Москву, продюсировал художественные фильмы и телесериалы. В 2004 году основал кинокомпанию «ТВИНДИ». Завоевал прочную репутацию в области международных копродукций. После 2014 года практически полностью посвятил свою карьеру созданию документальных фильмов на острые политические и социальные темы.
Он выступил продюсером фильма «Слишком свободный человек» (2016) о Борисе Немцове, тесно сотрудничал с режиссером Александром Расторгуевым над картиной «Выбирая Россию» (2018) об Алексее Навальном. После трагического убийства Расторгуева в 2018 году Гиндилис спродюсировал биографический документальный фильм «Расторгуев» (2021).
После полномасштабного вторжения России в Украину в 2022 году Гиндилис выступил против военной агрессии и эмигрировал во Францию. В Париже продолжил работу в документалистике. Выступил продюсером фильма «Артем и Ева» (2023, режиссер Евгений Милых) с участием телеканала Arte и фильма «Финист» о политическом процессе над театральной режиссеркой Женей Беркович (2027, реж. Яна Иртеньева). Организует ежегодные питчинги и ретроспективы документального кино в Париже.
