About Boris Lokshin. "Manhattan: A Myth Shot on Film in New York

The lecture "Manhattan: A Myth Shot on Film" is a story about how cinema shaped New York, and above all Manhattan, into one of the great modern myths: a city of desire, loneliness, success, and illusion. From Shadows and Rosemary's Baby to Sex and the City and When Harry Met Sally — through key films of different eras, we trace how the image of the city has changed and how it, in turn, shapes our perception of love, career, passion, and freedom. This is not just a film analysis, but an attempt to understand why the on-screen Manhattan feels more real to us than the actual one.

Boris Lokshin is a film critic and essayist living and working in New York. He was born in Moscow, spent half his life in Russia and half in the USA. He writes in Russian and English about cinema, culture, and the contemporary viewer's experience. He has published in the magazines "Novy Mir," "Iskusstvo Kino," "Teatr," "Seans," "Interpoeziya," "Kontrapunkt," as well as on the websites Colta.ru and Openspace.ru. He is the author of a regular column about cinema on the "Republic" website. He is the author of the essay collection "Cinema Theater of the Repeated Film" (NLO, 2022). In his lectures, he explores cinema as a space of myth, memory, and the viewer's personal experience.

This is the fourth lecture in the series "10 Lectures — 10 Faces of New York," curated by Nikolai Malinin.

New York is a city that can't be viewed from just one perspective. It changes depending on who is looking at it: a photographer, an artist, an art critic, a historian, a researcher, or simply a person who walks its streets every day. Over the course of several months, we will be gathering this enormous and mysterious city piece by piece. There will be remarkable guests, completely different topics, unexpected perspectives, and, we hope, many discoveries — even for those who have long considered themselves connoisseurs of New York, and, of course, a cozy atmosphere of our rabbit hole!

Ticket price is $40. Don't forget, our hall is quite small, and the number of seats in it is limited by its size. So get your tickets in advance to make sure you get in.
