About ALEX GOLDFARB. Book Presentation and Conversation with the Biologist and Human Rights Activist in New York

On October 21, White Rabbit’s Books welcomes a truly legendary guest — Alex Goldfarb, a biologist who combined a long scientific career with political and human rights activism.

His new book, Refusenik’s Son: A Story of Spies, Bioweapons, and Cold War Survival, has been published simultaneously in Russian and English.

It tells the story of how, after arriving in New York in the early 1980s, Alex fought to secure the release of his father from the Soviet Union. His father, also a biologist, was a prominent refusenik. In the process, Alex found himself drawn into what he calls “the last spy intrigue of the Cold War,” as the CIA and KGB faced off over a secret Soviet biological weapons program. In 1986, the elder Goldfarb was finally allowed to leave the USSR as part of a spy exchange connected to the Reagan–Gorbachev summit in Reykjavík.

A quarter of a century later, the former KGB officer who had once handled his father’s case revealed its operational details to Alex: denunciations, surveillance, and the identities of informants among friends and acquaintances.

A graduate of Moscow State University, Alex worked at the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow, then at the Weizmann Institute in Israel and Columbia University in New York. He is now retired.

In Moscow in the 1970s, Alex was part of Andrei Sakharov’s inner circle. In the 1990s, he ran George Soros–funded projects in Russia. In the 2000s, he became part of a London-based circle of Putin opponents that included Boris Berezovsky, Akhmed Zakayev, and Alexander Litvinenko.

Goldfarb helped Litvinenko flee Russia and publish his book Lubyanka Criminal Group. He was at Litvinenko’s side during the final days of his life. Later, together with Marina Litvinenko, he wrote Death of a Dissident: The Poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko and the Return of the KGB.

Don’t miss this event — it is a rare opportunity to hear Alex Goldfarb in person, not simply as a witness but as a direct participant in events that have already become history. Opportunities like this do not come along often: you’ll be able to hear history firsthand, ask questions, and speak with someone who found himself at the very center of it.

The event will be held in English or Russian, depending on the audience.

Admission: $20.
And a reminder: our space is very small and seating is limited. Please purchase your tickets in advance to make sure you get a seat.
